Do I need an orthodontist?
Orthodontists are ADA-recognized specialists who straighten teeth and correct bite problems. Some general dentists also offer clear aligners for simpler cases. Common reasons for treatment: crowded or crooked teeth, gaps, an overbite or underbite, or teeth that shifted after braces when a retainer wasn't worn.
The American Association of Orthodontists suggests a first orthodontic check by age 7. Adults can get braces or aligners at any age if their gums are healthy.
Braces vs clear aligners: which is right for you?
Your dentist will recommend what fits your teeth. This is how the common options differ.
| Metal braces | Ceramic braces | Clear aligners | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it looks | Visible metal brackets | Tooth-colored brackets | Nearly invisible trays |
| Removable | No | No | Yes, worn 20 to 22 hours a day |
| Best for | All cases, including complex bites | Most cases | Mild to moderate cases |
| Food limits | Avoid hard and sticky food | Avoid hard and sticky food | Take trays out to eat |

What happens at an orthodontic consultation?
The orthodontist checks your teeth and bite, takes photos and X-rays or a scan, and explains the options and how long treatment would take. Treatment often lasts 12 to 24 months, followed by a retainer. Ask for the full plan in writing, including retainers and what happens if you need extra aligners.
Broken bracket or poking wire? Cover it with orthodontic wax and call the office; it's rarely an emergency, but it should be fixed soon.
What should I ask the office?
- Is the doctor an orthodontist or a general dentist?
- How long will treatment take?
- Are retainers included in the plan?
- Do you offer payment plans?
- Does my insurance include orthodontic benefits?
And always: is the office in network for my insurance, and can I get a written treatment plan with costs before treatment starts?

Braces and clear aligners: common questions
Can adults get braces?
Yes. Many orthodontic patients are adults. Healthy gums and bone matter more than age.
Are clear aligners as good as braces?
For mild to moderate crowding and spacing, aligners often work well. For complex bites, braces may work better. An orthodontist can tell you which fits your case.
Will the dentist take my insurance?
Plans differ from office to office, including Medicaid and CHIP dental plans. Have your insurance card ready and ask the office before you book. If you don't have insurance, ask whether they offer payment plans or a membership plan.
Do I have to book an appointment?
No. The office tells you its openings, the insurance it takes and its prices, and you decide whether to book. If you book with a dental office, you pay that office directly for your care.
Who answers when I call?
